Fear of Flying? We Have the Cure

Flying is part of the job here at In Your Pocket. Indeed, thinking about it, the last calendar year has seen the Pocket Blogger take off and land at least 100 times. And yet, and yet, we hate flying. God we hate it. Taking off, landing, every bump, every wobble. And every time we get on a plane it gets worse. Irrational, I know, but at the same time perhaps understandable.

At least that was the case until last Tuesday, when Pocket Blogger got to ride in the cockpit of an Airbus A320 flying from ***** to ********** on a ******* flight.

We have had to delete any details to protect the identity of the pilot, a friend of ours, who would almost certainly be fired if the powers that be found out he was carrying his mates in the cockpit (one of whom was sitting on the dashboard as there were no seats).

Having seen first hand how very little pilots actually do (in a flight of just over an hour they were 'at the wheel' as it were for less than ten minutes) and how relaxed pilots are, flying now holds no fear for us. Every bump that used to make us shudder with fear is now ignored, safe in the knowledge that far from struggling to keep it all together up there in the cockpit the pilot is in fact sitting with his feet up drinking copious amounts of coffee.

To anyone who may be scared of flying, I implore you to find yourself a pilot willing to take you in the cockpit. Your fear will evaporate in an instant.

Money back guaranteed.

Things like this article make me scared of flying

Salamndstron,

The thing you have to remember is that the media ALWAYS over dramatise. Plus, they tend to focus a lot of attention on any incident in the air.

The prime example is a recent decompression on a Ryanair flight. I'm a flight attendant (although not for this company), and the way the flight crew and cabin crew reacted was 100% by the book.

But, reputable media companies attempted to pin all sorts on them.

Some explorer guy was on pretty much every news report saying how his son's oxygen mask was not inflating. Well, they don't always inflate - it depends on your rate of breathing. The 'bag' is simply there to regulate your supply of oxygen.

The funniest part of this, was that he also said his son was hyper-ventilating, which happens when you get too much oxygen! If the mask wasn't working, he WOULD DEFINITELY NOT BE HYPER-VENTILATING.

Several other passengers complained of masks not working. Truth is, if you don't get oxygen masks on in under a minute you start to lose sense of where you are, before losing consciousness altogether. Therefore, all masks must have been working fine!!!!!

Another complaint made by passengers/media was that they received no information from anyone for several minutes.

1. The cabin crew would be on oxygen themselves - possibly in a passenger seat.

2. The pilots would be on oxygen - and their masks cover their whole face - and they would also be VERY busy dealing with the situation (i.e. descending quickly to a safe altitude where breathing would be possible without the need of the oxygen supply).

Everyone on-board followed procedures to the smallest detail - but the media blew it up into a big deal.

I'm taking a very long time to make my point here - but trust me, media make things worse, whereas statistically, it's safer to fly on an aircraft than ride a bike!!

So, please do not fear - and ignore articles like the one you've linked to above.
